Randy Coven a technically accomplished hard rock bassist emerged in the early 1980, learning
bass while playing in local cover bands playing hard rock of the day. Right after he graduated from high school
enrolled in Berklee School of Music in BostonMassachusetts.
While at Berklee, he managed to hook up with guitar player Steve Vai
who was also from Long Island, New York. They formed their own local band. While the band never issued any
recordings, many of the bands songs would show up later on both Vai and Coven’s solo
albums.
After the group broke up, Randy went on to play in a Canadian based fusion band.
With this band Coven got his first taste of touring, and his first appearance on record, which featured a
pair of songs written by Coven.
Randy returned to New York in the mid-80’s formed his own band, the
Randy Coven Band, a trio which produced their debut album, Funk Me Tender, in 1985. The title track featured
a guest spot by Steve Vai.
The '90s saw Randy team with a pair of renowned guitarists, Leslie West andYngwie Malmsteen.
The early 21st century Randy released a 16-track compilation, The Best of Randy
Coven. Randy also issued his first true solo album in a decade, 2002's Witch
Way.
Randy has been kinda off the radar for a while, but I am sure he
is, like the rest of us, out there playing bass. Here are a couple of video.... check him
out.
