Growing Up Bass Player (The Beginning)
I had spent a short time in the school orchestra. I chose to play the
cello. I felt that to play the violin or the viola was a little to girlie( I was in the sixth grade at the time).
The bass was too large and I could not imagine myself carrying it around. Though my time as a cello player was
short, one school year, what I learned, music theory, was very helpful in learning the guitar. In retrospect, I do
not regret a minute I spent in the orchestra. Today I wish I had continued with the
orchestra at least through my high school days. Alas, I discovered girls and it was several years before I came
back to music. Little did I know that being a musician was such a girl magnet.
After a short time being a soldier, 3 years, 11 months, 29 days actually, I bought myself an
acoustic guitar and I taught myself to play. My time in the orchestra and a few early years (elementary
school) of piano lesson were very helpful and I learned the basics of the guitar very quickly. I would say I
was a relatively good rhythm player in a short time.
I met at this time another guitar player who was a working musician who was temporarily
between gigs. He was a monster lead player who could make my jaw drop in awe when he played. He wanted to
start a rock band (now called Classic Rock) so I join him and we stared looking for a bass player and a
drummer.
